More and more providers are mentioning Voip and Sip trunks and we hope that below some of the questions and myths surrounding this advancement in technology are answered in understandable terminology.

VOIP

Q:  What is VoIP?
A:   Acronym - Voice Over Internet Protocol
Plain English -Transmission of voice conversations over your internet connection

Q: How does it work?
A: Just like a modem converts digital (data) signals from the PC into analogue traffic (voice) for use over the phone line, a VoIP enabled phone or adaptor converts  your voice into digital packets (using SIP Protocol- See FAQ's on SIP) for sending over the net.

Q: Is it right for my business?

Q: Can I use my existing number?
A: As a general rule of thumb yes. It depends on who you chose as your service provider and if they have porting agreements with the owner of your existing number.

Q: Do I have to have broadband to use it?
A: Yes most definitely as the call goes via the Ethernet

Q: Will it work if the power fails?
A: No

Q: Can I keep my current phones and PBX/Switch?
A: It all depends on what you currently have.

Q:  What is SIP?
A: Acronym for Session Initiation Protocol
Plain English: It is the opening and end of an IP call.
The data is carried in the middle.

Q Why is everyone talking about SIP?
A. It is the next stage of open communications. It integrates both traditional telephony with the full range of internet telephony, including VoIP.

Q. What does SIP Trunking do?
A. It is a means to make a network support a protocol in may otherwise not achieve. It allows customers with equipment from a wide range of vendors to seamlessly converge services.

Q. Why would I use SIP Trunking?
A. SIP Trunking provides cheaper line rental for VoIP products on isdn30 circuits and it is also an integral part of VoIP.
